Improving language skills and learning new languages

The promotion of language skills and language acquisition is also one of the core objectives of the European Union's education program in the new Erasmus+ program generation 2021-2027.

During their stay abroad, Erasmus+ funding recipients are supported in acquiring and improving their working and/or national language skills.

Language support in the Erasmus+ Online Language Support program is now technically available via the EU Academy platform. According to the EU Commission, this platform will be operational from August 2022. Erasmus+ funding recipients have various options: Self-assessment of language skills through so-called self-assessments (language tests), which can be carried out at any point during the mobility, as well as participation in language courses in any number of languages. The second language test at the end of the mobility is no longer required and is no longer mandatory in the 2020 and 2021 projects. With the OLS language course, Erasmus+ funding recipients (students, trainees and staff) can improve their foreign language skills (with a physical stay of at least 14 days) before and during their stay abroad.

To begin with, the five most frequently used languages will be made available on the new platform. EN, FR, DE, ES, IT. With the introduction of the new platform, the language selection for online language support will be gradually expanded. In addition to the 24 official languages of the European Union, language support will also be provided for Icelandic, Macedonian, Norwegian, Serbian and Turkish. If the mobility language is not yet implemented in the OLS tool at the beginning, we generally recommend using the language support in English.
