Visa

Please check the website of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany to see whether you need a visa for your stay. Please bear in mind that processing a visa application can take a long time.

In general, the need for a visa depends on

  1. Your nationality
  2. The duration of your stay
  3. the reason for your stay

If you wish to study at Clausthal University or attend a language course, please do not enter the country on a tourist visa, but enquire about the relevant visa categories.

Citizens of European Union member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland can enter Germany without a visa. All you need is a valid identity card or passport.

You can apply for a visa at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. Contact addresses for the relevant embassies and consulates can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

Please note that the International Center cannot answer any questions on visa matters. If you have any questions, please contact the German embassy or foreigners authority responsible for you directly. TU Clausthal cannot influence or speed up the visa processing procedure.

In order to obtain a visa, you must prove that you can manage your studies financially. You can prove this, for example, in the form of proof of income from your parents, a security deposit in a blocked account, a bank guarantee or a recognized scholarship. Please enquire about the conditions at the German embassy or consulate in your country.

Many international students use a blocked account to prove their finances. The money transferred to this account is blocked until you enter Germany. It is important to request the documents for this in good time. The completed forms, together with a copy of your passport, must be notarized at the German diplomatic mission in your country. Only then can you apply for the account for a fee. After arriving in Germany, you will receive an EC card with which you can withdraw the money.

Examples of blocked account providers can be found on the right-hand side under "Links". Of course, there are many other providers of blocked accounts. Please find out for yourself which provider is best suited to you.
