Bank account

In Germany, cash payments still play a major role in everyday life. However, regular payments, such as rent and electricity, can be automatically debited from your current account. This is often a prerequisite for rent and other regular payments.

It is therefore necessary for you to open a current account (i.e. a current account from which payments can be made and received, even from abroad) at a German bank. In Clausthal-Zellerfeld there is a branch of the Volksbank and a branch of the Sparkasse, where you can also receive personal service on site. However, you can also open a bank account at any bank in Germany.

To open a bank account, you will need the following documents:

  • Identity document (e.g. passport)
  • Confirmation of registration from the city or residence permit
  • Certificate of enrollment from TU Clausthal
  • Tax ID (can be applied for at the Citizens' Office)

There are other things that should be done on arrival or shortly afterwards. It is best to take advantage of our Welcome Day and the TUC Starter Weeks, where you will be supervised by students.
