The European Commission has made an online language test available for almost all European languages (Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish Gaelic, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian, Slovak, Spanish or Swedish).

This is mandatory for all students/graduates both after selection/before the start of the mobility and after the end of the stay in the working language. However, it is not a selection criterion for funding in the Erasmus+ program and does not apply to native speakers.

Once the participants to be funded in Erasmus+ have been selected, the language test should serve as a placement test to document their current language level. It should take place both before their stay abroad and at the end of the respective stay abroad in order to obtain comparable results and to be able to record any progress made by the funded participants in language acquisition.

The systematic, Europe-wide review of the development of individual language skills makes it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of Erasmus+. Agreements reached between partner universities/institutions in inter-institutional agreements (IIA) and learning agreements (LA) on specific language levels are therefore not to be documented/confused with online tests. These language skills must be verified by other evidence when selecting participants.
